Men spreekt van big data wanneer data vanwege hun grote niet meer door reguliere databasemanagementsystemen te onderhouden zijn.  De hoeveelheid data die gemaakt, opgeslagen, geraadpleegd en gedeeld wordt, groeit door de digitalisering van de maatschappij exponentieel. Organisaties, overheden en bedrijven wereldwijd beheren steeds meer data over burgers, elkaar, maar ook steeds meer apparaten verzamelen data, slaan deze op en delen dezen (het zogenaamde internet off things ook wel IoT genoemd). Hierdoor is er ook steeds meer sensordata beschikbaar. Het analyseren van deze data speelt een steeds grotere rol. Deze data bevatten immers een schat aan informatie voor verschillende doeleinden zoals klinisch en wetenschappelijk onderzoek, monitoren van gezondheid, of preventief ict systeem onderhoud. Maar ook voor marketingdoeleinden en het voorspelen van gedragingen van bijvoorbeeld valuta. Niet alleen de opslag van deze hoeveelheden data is een uitdaging, maar ook de beveiliging daarvan.
